Vikings in Skipsea

Skipsea was invaded by the Vikings before the Norman Conquest.  The name is likely to derive from the Viking name of “Ship Lake”.  The village was originally located on the edge of a lake which has since disappeared due to the coastal erosion.

Skipsea Castle

was built in 1086 by the Normans.  William the Conqueror gave it to Drogo de la Beauvrière, who had fought alongside him at the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
